One Question Interview: July Edition

Garage Tools Welding Welders Lathe Mill

The one question interview is back this month after a hectic June. In this months segment we asked all our favorite greasebags the following question:

What sound in your shop - reoccurring or not - drives you crazy?

Lots of great answers as always of the short and sweet variety. Lots of new guys in the mix this month, which is killer. This is one of my favorite segments on the site, so I’m psyched to see it get bigger.

As always, I love to hear you guys (yes YOU) answer the question as well, so use the comments section to drop some knowledge/sarcasm/humor/wit/etc…With that said, onto the show. (Make sure to click read more to check out all the answers). Now, onto the show:

My mechanical pressbrake. Every cycle emits an ear piercing screech, and at the end of a long day it makes me want to kill anyone that looks at my crossways.

There’s a light fixture above my bench, that’s actually attached to the bench, and anytime I’m doing edges or buffing leather it makes this mind bending squeal… no matter what I do to it wont stop!

That’s an easy one: The phone & the air compressor, if I never had to hear that compressor cut on again it wouldn’t be a bad thing. The phone mainly because it always rings right as I’ve got my hands covered in oil or I’m holding onto to some part of the bike I can’t let go of. But hey, it could be worse, I could be sitting here all day with nobody calling. Oh, the other one is when somebody says they’re thinking about hot rodding their bagger. I could definitely live without hearing that ever again.

The sound of my 26 year old female co-worker who is constantly talking. Kill me now!

Silence. When it’s quiet in the shop, you now something bad has happened or is about to happen. Kinda like walking through the jungle and the birds and monkeys suddenly disappear, leaving you to wonder what’s creeping up on you. Same thing in the shop when it gets quiet. When the music is off and no grinders or machines are running, you know you’re going to walk around the corner and see a disaster.

This one is easy!!! The sound of the current girl I’m dating saying “How much longer are you going to be?” Or “Are you going to be working on that bike ALL DAY?” (or anything along those lines). I’d DEFINITELY say it’s a reoccurring noise usually followed by the also reoccurring noise of the aforementioned girl’s ass meeting the backside of the garage door as she’s kicked out.

The phone ringing! I know it means business but damn the sucker seems to ring all the time so you can’t get shit done!

The clicking of a solenoid and the swearing that follows…

The sound of people saying “that can’t be done” or “it’s never been done like that before….”. That drives me absolutely crazy. Whether the person saying it has 10 days or 10 years of experience they should ALWAYS try new things that will push the envelope of technology and creativity. If we’re not challenging our selves and our craft, we’re just an “also ran” type of business/shop/person. Which is not where we’re going to be as a shop….never!

The one sound I hated in the old shop was the sound of ambulances. We were located across the street form a specialty vehicle builder and they would blast sirens and PAs all day long. The new shop is located on our farm. Sounds now are my dogs, horses, 4 wheelers, air tools, grinders and other machinery which doesn’t annoy me at all. I know have a clean room for engine building and the only noise that annoys me is a phone call while building up an engine. I now just shut the ringer off and let it go to voicemail. So now that problem is solved.

The sound that really drives me nuts is the sound from my compressor. I have such a small work space, with the walls so close to each other it makes it even worse. To make matters worse it is one of the cheap ones so it seems like it is always turning on. Oh well, I still have fun with it.

The only thing I can think at the biz shop of is the sound of the booth on the bake cycle, because I’m anxious to get whatever is in there out to the real light, its like x-mas morning. At my personal shop it would be the sound of silence and the sound of the kicker on my SL350, i’ve heard that son of a bitch waaay to many times in the last month, trying to get the carbs and timing dialed in just right after not having run in 27 yrs. Putting the finishing touches on a new exhaust for it, and starting the rebuild of the trumpet, so maybe the deafening silence will be broken in the next week or two.

The sound of sacrificial chickens (and the scampering chiwawas) at the hands of the Santeria witches living above the shop drive me kinda nuts sometimes.

Actually no sound at all drives me crazy !! If I am not making any noise myself I need to have some tunes on, nice and loud. Don’t know how some people work with no music on, maybe its just me.

No sound at all is a real bummer. It usually means I’m not building anything at the moment. Fortunately, I’ve got a donor to keep me occupied this Summer.

My head fucks with me all day long; from mild little buzzes that force screams in combat , to strange wooshing and clicking noises that have no cause. I think i’m just paranoid for some strange reason as the sound of nearly finnished soft drink through a straw is another common shop sound…

It may sound crazy but with ever increasing electricity bills, I cringe every time my huge air compressor kicks on and the lights dim. I figure it’s probably a couple bucks each time. Of course, it always sucks when I hear one of my drunk buddies knock something over on the way to get another beer. When glass breaks and I can’t see what the hell happened, it makes me just shake my head.

  1. Jason McElroy says:

As some idiot with his pants down to his thighs walks right in off the street assuming that he won’t be held at gunpoint or bitten in half by the dog walks up and says either. . .

“Yo, work on Banshees up in here?” (seeing a hundred classic motorcycles and hotrods in the main room, not one of them with plastic fenders and spinning rims)

    or

“He bite? Damn. Control yo dog” (even though they’re on private property)

    Jason

  2. Goon says:

The one sound I cant stand while I am out in the garage is the sound of someone coming up my damn driveway. To me that sound just represents a distraction from whatever I am working on at the time, leave me the hell alone. My garage, my sanctuary, stay away unless I call you or ask you to come over.

  3. sledmotorsrule says:

i was gonna say the chop-saw or the phone ringing…

but really, its the sound of whatever tiny, irreplacable, thingy hitting the ground and bouncing seemingly into another dimension never to return.
or its the sound skin makes when it scrapes against metal.

  4. terry says:

I hate the sound of my bike backfiring on a cold morning. Its like somebody is hitting the fucking pistons with a hammer!
