New England Motorcycle Expo 2008 Review
Here’s my quick review/rundown of the New England Motorcycle Expo this weekend…
Got there Saturday night a bit after 6pm - definitely was not crowded. I guess there were a lot of people there during the day, but it was pretty sparse when I walked in.
Cost to get in - yes yes, putting on these shows is expensive, sure, I get it, but $12 to park and $15 to get in?! Fuck that. Shit is out of control. I’d be really mad about this if I hadn’t been able to sneak in the back door and save myself the $15 cover charge.
If it hadn’t been for the Indian Larry and Choppahead set ups I would have been in and out of there in 10 minutes. The kind of bikes on display were the kind you’d expect - high dollar, chrome-doodads galore, wide tire shit, but I knew that before hand. There were a couple random cool bikes thrown in, but even less than last year (which wasn’t many). It WAS nice to get out and take a few pics of a couple cool bikes, but again, if I had paid $30 to get in, I would have been ripshit (gotta bring that phrase back).
One last thing that stuck in my craw…. Billy Lane had been promoted as a “celebrity guest” pretty heavily on the show marketing materials (website/flyers/direct mail), and apparently he was there at some point, but not when I got there. Now, I wasn’t there to see Mr. Choppers Inc. and could really care less if he was there or not. But I thought it was pretty shady move on the promoters part to build up his appearance so heavily and then his presence at the show was pretty much nil. The Choppers Inc. “booth” was basically one bike surrounded by empty plastic tables and that’s it. No Lane, no parts or t-shirts for sale, nothing. I guess I can understand if the celebrity is too busy throwing some back at the strip club down the street, but at the very least you would expect some sort of booth setup. Again, I could care less, but as someone who has put on a few shows I thought it sucked for folks who are/were fans of his and drove any amount of distance, paid $12 to park and $15 to get in, only to find out they had missed the “appearance time”.
Anyway, that’s my take on it, as you would expect - lame.

Boycott them next year. It probably will be more of the same a year from now.

All of those shows are a waste of time. I’m surprised that you spent to time and energy to go. REAL BIKERS see what they want and don’t PAY to hang with magazine heros. It’s people like you that keep those shows going. As far as cracking shit at Billy by sayin that “he’s probadly at the local stripjoint”……for your info (just to set it straight for you magazine junkies) HE IS SOBER AND HAS BEEN FOR AWHILE. If anything,,,he is focused, and building some great stuff.
Think about what you can do for this culture,,,,,we have enough problems than bashing “tv heros”
